Innovation Software Engineer (Abingdon/ Remote, UK)

The Team

The Innovation Team is a small group led by the company founder to research and deliver world leading techniques to make information available for generations to come. We regularly publish papers in respected academic journals and present at international conferences. Our current focus includes:

• Handling complex multi-file objects such as 3D and GIS in a consistent manner

• Ensuring content is analysed and the format migrated as best practice evolves over a dataset of many millions of files containing over a thousand different formats.

• Delivering this format management at scale in a cloud environment

• Integrating our Digital Preservation system with Microsoft 365 in a seamless manner

• Creating international standards to allow cooperation across the world

• Exploring using AI and Machine Learning to categorise content in the collection

The Role

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join this Innovation Team, conducting original Digital Preservation research and delivering new product features to enhance the state of the art in this emerging area. You will be able to adapt your software style, producing fast prototype code to try out new ideas as well as writing well designed, testable and maintainable efficient code for new product features. Your work will extend to include:

• Discussing Digital Preservation research with world leading investigators

• Creating prototypes to evaluate new Digital Preservation concepts

• Analysis to create new production features

• Integrating software components into our fully functioning software system

• Developing verification plans – adhering to quality assurance procedures

• Performing Peer code reviews.

Our offices are in Abingdon but this role can be either office based or worked remotely in the UK.

What we look for

To be part of Preservica you need:

• BSc / MSc or PhD level education in an engineering / software / system related subject or equivalent through relevant training and/or experience.

• Be familiar with Agile development practices, including Continuous Integration and Scrum.

• Experience in Java development (Enterprise level a bonus).

• Good knowledge of Java, Dependency Injection (Spring), Hibernate and Web Services.

• RDMS experience an advantage.

• Containerisation (Docker), Message Broker (RabbitMQ) and Microservice knowledge an advantage.

• 3+ years Java experience.

You will also need to:

• Be able to conduct your own research and to create new innovative solutions

• Work to tight deadlines, get involved in Scrum meetings, work closely with other Software Engineers and also with Test Analysts.

• Be personable and have good communication skills, be pro-active and confident to present in team meetings when required.
