Why cloud storage and digital preservation
I have been saying for quite some time now that while cloud storage provides some necessary features for digital preservation it is not a digital preservation system in and of itself.
I have been saying for quite some time now that while cloud storage provides some necessary features for digital preservation it is not a digital preservation system in and of itself. See the digital preservation maturity modelfor my thoughts on this. So it was great to see the Instrumental report on Digital Preservation and Cloud Services (Public) arriving at the same conclusion.
The report prepared for the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) was commissioned to help MHS compare costs and benefits of increasing its existing storage versus purchasing vendor storage service such as cloud storage. To my knowledge it’s the first third party report in the public domain that addresses this and as such is well worth reading.
