Yes, not only is Preservica secure by design, you can also control which subset of your archive AI should apply to using the Enrichment policy. This gives you granular control down to folder location, specific security tag, or both. In addition, Preservica's AI is embedded within the customer’s instance so your data never leaves your system. Where data does leave the system such as with our Image Analysis feature which uses cloud AI services, data is transferred in a secure way and stays within your cloud provider (available for Azure only).
A credit is a billing unit of Preservica AI. Using AI services consumes 1 or more credits. For example, a single credit can be used to apply PII detection to one page of a PDF document, and 8 credits could be used for a minute of AV transcription. Credit limits are applied per month and unused credits cannot be carried over.
Every time Preservica AI performs an action, it consumes credits. Please refer to the list below for some examples of how credits are applied:
- Image description - 1 credit per image
- PII detection - 1 credit per asset
- OCR - 1 credit per page
- AV transcription - 8 credits per minute
Your Preservica AI services won't continue to run until credits are added again. But don't worry, you can check how much you've used in ‘Monthly volumes’ under ‘Reports’ to see how much allowance you have left. It will also be flagged on the Process Monitor, allowing you to identify processes that exceed your allowance. There are several options if you run out of credits before the next billing cycle: You can upgrade your subscription before the end of the term or purchase extra credits in bundles (see below) at the fixed price defined in your subscription.

- Starter Plus: 5 credits
- Professional: 100 credits
- Professional Plus: 250 credits
- Enterprise: 500 credits
- Enterprise Plus: 1,000 credits
Yes, human oversight remains important. AI speeds up tagging and classification, but archivists or records managers typically oversee quality, especially where legal, cultural or compliance issues matter.
Preservica controls to what extent the AI is applied to ensure the integrity and authenticity of your assets. With the exception of Image Analysis, all our AI tools are fully embedded within our infrastructure, they are containerized within their own service, and because of this, we are in full control of how they are implemented. Furthermore, the tools are only provided with the minimal information they need to produce a desired output without affecting the contents of the asset. The only AI feature not using an embedded AI tool is Image Analysis, this uses Microsoft Azure’s Vision AI service. This feature is currently available on-demand for customers on Azure systems.
For example, in the case of PII detection, we provide a copy of the full text contents of the asset, which is then checked for PII. Any PII that is found is added as metadata to the asset under a schema labelled 'PII Detection', so that the information manager can review and take appropriate action.
