Digital preservation rises up the information governance agenda

According to the report long-term preservation of digital assets is a challenge: “As formats change, software is retired and hardware becomes obsolete, the data that organizations might want to keep can be lost forever.”

“Most of what we do today is digital-only, and although the vast bulk of digital information should have short-to medium-term retention requirements, there is a significant amount that should be preserved for the longer term with retention times greater than 10 years. Government documents are one example, but companies also have information that needs to be preserved in order to ensure records will be readable and usable when required. Manufacturing, infrastructure, pharmaceutical companies and even financial services organizations all have data that falls into this category”.
