Press release: Outstanding contributions to digital preservation recognised

Quality of winners and nominees at Digital Preservation Coalition 2012 awards ceremony highlights the importance and progress securing long- term future of digital collections.

Oxford | 5 December 2012. Tessella, world leaders in digital preservation, congratulates all of the winners and nominees for the Digital Preservation Award and thanks the Digital Preservation Coalition (http://www.dpconline.org) for organising the event. The Digital Preservation 2012 awards (http://www.dpconline.org/newsroom/latest-news) were announced at a prestigious ceremony held at the Wellcome Collection in London, UK on Wednesday 3rd December 2012.

Jon Tilbury, Tessella’s Director of Archiving Solutions, said: I am delighted that the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) organised this award ceremony. They have created a much needed forum to highlight the importance of the work being done in digital preservation and to recognise initiatives and individuals from around the world that have made an outstanding contribution to safeguard digital resources for the future.”

Tessella has a long association with the ceremony, being part of award winning teams in 2003 and 2007 as part of The National Archives’ digital archive and PRONOM/DROID respectively. This year we were involved in three of the four projects nominated in Research and Development in Digital Preservation category including the winning PLANETS project (http://www.planets-project.eu/), and two of the four nominated projects Decennial category.”

Dr Rob Sharpe, Tessella’s Head of Archiving Solutions added: Providing practical solutions to the Digital Preservation challenge is a collaborative effort. I have been delighted to have been part of so many of the projects nominated this year and to have had the opportunity to work with the leaders in this emerging field. The PLANETS project in particular has moved our knowledge forward huge strides and the output from all of this work will lead to digital material being kept safe for future generations.” ‑ends-
